America Divided

Today, we find ourselves with a new president-elect and swept up in a whirlwind of emotions.

Regardless of which side of the aisle you find yourself on at this tumultuous time in America's history, I think we can all agree that during this election season, the worst has been brought out in Americans. But somehow, through the onslaught of political rhetoric, candidate-bashing, and destructive social media commentary, we've made it. The campaigns have (finally) come to an end.

But today, whether you're celebrating your candidate's victory or lamenting your candidate's loss, one thing is certain - there is an undeniable and growing divide in America's citizens. Some feel that the fabric of our country is being ripped to shreds while others believe that it's just beginning to be mended.

My question to you is this - as Christians, how are we called to respond to the growing divide between our neighbors?

In Paul's letter to the Colossians, he provides us with an insightful piece of wisdom that our country needs today and in the coming weeks:

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity."
- Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)

At a time of such division, these words serve as a strong reminder of how Christ's people are to approach one another. We are called to bear with one another and to be kind and gentle in our interactions. While this can sometimes be difficult for us to accomplish, this is the first step that we can take toward a more united country.

I would encourage my readers to be mindful of Paul's words as our country moves forward with new leadership and pray continually for our newly elected leaders. Remember that God has always been and always will be in control.
